You talking about the rear fender strut covers....??

I believe they made a couple changes to the softail frames during the Twin Cam years, but I can't quote the years/changes off the top of my head... I believe one of the changes was in 2007...

So I looked up the frames/ part numbers of the 2006 FLSTN and 2011 Fat Boy...

Per the online parts finder, they are different part numbers and look to fit differently... Pretty sure it wouldn't be a bolt-on compatible swap...

2006 FLSTN:

2011 Fat Boy:

They are totally different parts, but that is the point. He wants to convert a Fatboy into a Deluxe. I am sure it is possible to do so, but I am not sure it can be done with that spread in years. If I am not mistaken, the frame change that allowed the 200mm rear was in 2007, so it is likely that whatever he used as a donor would have to be 2007 or later. I believe there was a change between 2007 and 2008 as well, so to be safe, I would want to go with 2008 or later. Seems like there was some weird stuff going on with the 2007 as it was the transition year.

Also, I am not sure where I read it, but if I am not mistaken, the last 2 digits on the part number are the year the part was introduced. The strut part number for the 06 Deluxe ends in 03, and was in use until 2007. In 2008 they changed to the 2 piece strut/chromed cover.

I believe you are correct that it wouldn't work, but not for the reason you think. the Fatboy strut is different from the Deluxe, but it will swap over IF they are for the same generation frame. Swapping a 2006 fender and struts onto a 2008 or later frame might work, but I wouldn't risk it. I would hold out for a 2008 or later setup to swap.

That's why I included the parts diagram... to show that the frame looks different in those two different years, so they aren't a direct swap...

I understand about the part number year range and all.... but if you compare the parts finder for the two bikes, the 2006 Deluxe & Fat Boy, as well as the 2011 Deluxe and Fat Boy... both bikes from the same years, use the same strut cover part numbers..

That's why I asked if he was talking about the rear fender strut covers at the beginning of my post...

Don't mean to be argumentative, but that is only partly correct. 2006 Deluxe and Fatboy share a common part number for the strut, because they are the same rear wheel/tire size, but there is a significant difference between the 2011 Deluxe and Fatboy, to make up for the difference in wheel size. Wider tire = wider fender, and therefore requires different struts.

He can swap 08 and later to accomplish what he wants, but 06 is a no go.

It's all good..... You're not being argumentative, we are saying the same thing...

We both agree the 2006 part won't work on the 2011 bike and that the frames at the struts are different between the 2006 and 2011....

I thought I might not be understanding what exact part he was referring to... because I don't understand why he would want to change that part...

As I read his question, he wants to use a 2006 Deluxe part, to change his 2011 Fat Boy to a Deluxe. I didn't understand why, given that his 2011 Fat Boy uses the same part as a 2011 Deluxe....?

in nay case, he certainly got his answer....
