Default Lowered, now what?

I have a metallurgy question. After lowering my Deluxe, it stands close to vertical. Being the cheapskate that I am I think I'll heat and bend my Jiffy stand. Should I quench in water after bending or will that make it brittle or weak? If I let it air cool will it be soft and bend more easily?

Dan

Let it air cool and it will be fine. remember, a dab will do it, don't go crazy with the torch.

Thank the motorcycle gods you didn't ask about drilling a hole in your jiffy stand.

I wouldn't trust a stand after heating and bending it. Once you heat it up you lose the original hardening from the initial quench. Gotta ask yourself, what's a cheaper cost? Replacing with a shorter stand or repairing paint, fender, tank, primary, bars, mirror etc if it tips over?

You could heat and then quench the steal to get it back to hardness but then the chrome is shot. I would just buy the proper length and install.

The problem with bending the Jiffy stand is that it will stick out when retracted.

I guess I should have referenced the thread I was thinking of for clarity. Not sure if this qualifies for cross thread points or not. A member asked about drilling a simple hole in the jiffy stand tab to add an extension to make easier to deploy, If my failing memory is correct. It turned into a metallurgical massacre.

Don't half *** it by heating and bending. Cut off the foot, shorten the shank an inch or so, angle it properly and have a competent welder weld it back on.

As an engineer - you are getting some overthinking of a simple process here. But, it's your bike and you need to decide what you are comfortable with.
