Purchased a new combo kit for my 16 Heritage 74774-11d speedo.
All the older videos online show using a data link connector to transfer the info to the new speedo.
The new one I ordered did not have the data link connector and no mention made of it in the install instructions.
Has that process just been eliminated and no longer needed to marry the unit to the bike?
Yes, in the past you would connect the new speedo to a data cable connected to the data port of the bike BEFORE installing the speedometer. Apparently, the installation has changed.
I just read the instructions for your speedo/tach combo. In INSTALL #7, it instructs you to insert the connector into the back of the speedometer. That should take the place of the data link cable you are referring to. In #12, when you "Turn ignition switch to IGN...", the new speedometer should retrieve the odometer reading from the ECM.
Have you attempted to install the new speedometer or did you hold off because of the discrepancy with the video instructions?
1. If you tried to install it, what happened? Was it successful? If it wasn't successful, what did you encounter?
2. If you haven't installed it yet, do so by following the instructions.
I was waiting to install in case someone said don't do it dumbass. I hear that often lol usually after its to late.
I went ahead and installed with current instructions and all went mostly well. No pre sync needed.
My only issue was getting the new speedometer installed without dislodging the gasket around the center console. I finally found a utube video suggesting wiping the gasket with wd40 to ease install. Much better!
I'm glad you got it installed and it synced as it should. It's looking nice.
It also looks like both gas gauges match closely. Others have reported they didn't. Enjoy the new speedo. I've had mine since I purchased the bike in 2012 and it has been problem free.
According to Harley no Fits '04-'11 Dyna®, '04-'10 Softail® (except FLSTSE) and '04-'13 Road King® models (except '07-'08 FLHRSE) equipped with a 5" Speedometer.
But the HD website is not always accurate It might fit but I doubt most of the options would work.
The ECM/Speedo interface changed a few times with the early Twin Cam bikes....
The carbed bikes were different from the EFI. The EFI '02 and the '03 are different from the '04... There was an ECM change, I forget what, from the '04+ bikes.
Many years ago, I looked into getting a speedo/tach combo for my 2003 Heritage. At that time, they had them for the '04+, but didn't have one for the '03 or older...

Skyflyer is correct.
Per the Harley website there is no speedo/tach compatible with the Freewheeler.
Below is a picture of a Harley speedo/tach installed on my Freewheeler.
Also is a bonus side-by-side picture of the Harley speedo/tach also on my Heritage.

It was plug and play on my '06 Springer. Gas gauges match closely, although when I fill up, it takes several minutes for the new gauge (in the speedo) to report then new fuel level. It was a great (and fairly economical) upgrade.
Your ECM is different than mine. My 07, I had to use a supplied cable to hook up to the data link. Your speedo looks identical to mine. I really like it.
