I am about to turn 68 years old and am 1 month out of a single hip replacement (anterior approach) Before my replacement i could barley throw my leg over the seat on my softail with no backrest. Three weeks after surgery i had no problem in mounting the bike and riding for a 1 hour ride, and then meeting with friend for an hour, and then ride back home for an hour return trip with no problems but a little sore later in the day. Today Im gonna try the same ride at the one month post surgery mark. We shall see!!!

Wow! If you are riding 1 month post surgery, that is way quicker recovery than I thought. I have read it takes people like 9 months or more to get full mobility back and that was with rehab. Mind you, that guy was a jogger which I am not.

I had my right knee replaced in October, 2013 when I was 58. The doctor told me (preop) to lose some weight and strengthen my quads. I went into surgery in litteraly in the best shape in my life (and I was a gym rat for decades). I doubled up my therapy and went to the gym after therapy and did what I could. I probably could have been back on the bike by Christmas, but since it was winter, I didn’t. Once the temperature warmed up enough, I was riding by mid February.

Do what your therapist tells you and then some. You will be back on your bike before you know it.

Well my surgery was just a single hip, and I never said it was a full recovery. I still get sore as I learn my limits, but im at a point where I feel that short rides are within them limits. I actually found that between the vibrations of the engine, and the constant motion of my lower body as I ride im more comfortable than driving in my truck for the same amount of time.

I found my post of my first ride after new hips

yesterday (4/9)
50 miles continuous loop/no get off stops (little over an hour seat time)
What made that a big deal, was first ride with new hips (left done 10 weeks ago, right done 2 and a half weeks ago)
didn't know what to expect.
Right is still a little tender, but happy as a pig in chit to discover all is fine.... even with the right still soft/healing, it's better now than before the replacement

================================================== ========

I'm hopeful yours goes as well as mine and most others I know
BUTT,,,Here's something my doc told me before surgery

"You can't go by other's experience good or bad"

I can say that's true because my left replacement recovery was way faster and less troublesome than right.
Nevertheless, I was back to work in 4 weeks after second hip was done

don't recall how long until "full" recovery
Doc said "let your body tell you how hard/much you can do"

I do know i rode all that summer without a bit of trouble.
I should note though, I'm a fair weather rider and most rides are well under 100 miles rnd trip

KTF
