I just purchased a 06 softail standard(EFI) it has 7 miles on it and Im going to change the pipes (a must) going to the Big radius, I already purchased the pipes/race tuner and the screamin eagle air cleaner assy. What Im wanting to know is if I should ride the bike for a while before I change out the pipes ? Is there a break in period I should go thru ? The dealer that is going to install everything said they can do it anytime...They seem to know what they are talking about but I wanted to ask you guys first. Also Im going to change the fuel guage to the new flush mount LED guage w/ flush fuel cap, how do you remove the original fuel guage ? Thanks Chris
Howdy, congrats on the new Softail. When I got my Springer this year, they installed the pipes before it left the dealership. I had the stage 1 upgrade done before it ever left the shop, saved me a trip back and it was already there.

Little tip for ya, do your first oil change after you have run 50-75 miles on that bike. Your bike will reward you in the long haul. You got alot of metal particles floating around the oil from the initial break-in period during the first few miles.
MegaHD or anyone who can answer..Is it better to switch to synthetic at that mileage (50-75) or stay with the conventional stuff? When is the best time to start using synthetic. I know its little off topic of the Stage 1 upgd that this post is about, but its still related to breakin. Thanks!
Should I just change the oil ? or should I go ahead and change the filter too ? Then should I wait the usual 1000 miles and do the break in fluid change ? This is my baby so I want to do the best thing in the long run regardless of cost...
THANKS for all your help !!! This forum is awesome !

You can switch to synthetic at any time regardless of miles. The only difference would be in the cost of the oil change.
We went to synthetic oil at the first oil change. Did the pipes and stage 1 at the same time as the first oil change. Do not think it matters much, alot of folks put alot of mods on before even leaving the shop.

Change the filter too, that's where all the contaminents are. I did mine at 100/1000/2500 with a filter and synthetic each time. Cheap insurance.
I run synthetic from day 1 on all my builds. So in short yes you can run synthetic mmediately on a brand spankin new engine or a rebuild with 0 miles. And anytime you change the oil you always change the filter.
You should seat the rings in with a std oil, before going to synthetic. It might not be a big difference on a Harley motor, but I have seen dyno sheets of a race motor and it dropped HP when going from regular oil to synthetic. The reason is that synthetic does not burn like regular oil, and you will always have some getting into the combustion chamber.
