My backrest pad is held on by a screw, the head of which, is covered by a HD medallion. The medallion fits in a small recess and is held on by sticky film that was on the medallion. I know this because I put it together. I'm not sure the medallion can be easily removed without damaging it. If it was removed it would probably be necessary to put some kind of adhesive on it to hold it in place again.

I have not thought of bringing in all the leather as part of winter storage. I'm in northern Ohio with an unheated garage. When I was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska all of us kept our cars outside year round and I can't remember any damage to the leather seats. It's probably smart to take a little bit better care of your bike than necessary. I'd bring the whole bike in the house if I was allowed.

Rather than prying your medallion off, just cover it with a pillow case.

If you are removing the leather, and you have a stock back rest, why are you removing the backrest? The seat and backrest are covered in vinyl (except for a samll flap on the seat). The only stock item that is leather on your bike is the saddle bags!

Agree with HD7585 My buddy tried to take his off and ruined the medallion. Just wipe it down with a good leather conditioner (I use Lexal) I had a 91 sporty that I sold to my brother and after 17 years the leather looks brand new and has never been stored inside for the winter.

I wouldn't waste your time taking anything off. Never had a problem with my leather car seats in the winter lol.

Geoseismic: I didn't say I was removing the backrest,I said the leather pad on it. BTW, I guess I lucked out and bought the only Harley with a leather seat, glad I didn't get one of those vinyl jobs.

Just my opinion, but I think it's kind of extreme to remove the leather items...

I've never removed any leather or vinyl from any of my bikes, and none of them are in heated areas.

Just wipe them down with some good conditioner, and out of the elements. The cold isn't going to harm the leather or vinyl.

I also have a couple 'fair weather' high performance cars that aren't used much (if any) during the nasty winter months, and they are kept under a carport out of the elements. They both have leather interiors (along with normal vinyl stuff), and and nothing has suffered any worse for wear by being out in the cold for over 17 years.

Harley's aren't that fragile, and hold up pretty well during the winter.

Souther Ohio here Hiflyer. Yea I know taking the seat and bags off seems a little extreme, but I always have.I read an article in a bike mag. many moons ago about the effect that cold temperatures have on leather. Probably a little over kill on my part.

Nope! Harley made two leather seats and I got the other one.
