Fat boy 08 1600 miles and it crashes into first at the first attempt after this it is still clonky but otherwise o/k.
Im concerned it will break the g/box the dealer tells me this is alright should I take his word for it.
Ive tried running the engine to get warm and rolling the bike forward befor sellecting gear which sometimes eases it a bit surely this is not right I know HD boxes are clonky but should they be this bad at first gear engage.
Ya got a '08 Fatboy with 16-Thousand miles on it already? (maybe a typo?)
My '08 Fatboy with almost 8,000 miles still makes a WONDERFUL clunk/donk/clonk sound when dropping into first gear. Sometimes a little more violent when the motor & gears are cold.
Working the clutch in & out while the bike warms up in neutral will lessen the noise when you do drop into first gear on a cold bike.
This is normal, and I hope the noise lasts forever (at least for me). I would much rather have a positive sense of dropping into first than a mushy half-in half-out uncertainty.
They are fairly clunky, at least mine has been since day one. But before Iwrote it off I think you should check theclutch cable adjustment. The clutch may not be completely disengaugingand dragging theinput shaft a little bit.
If it is it WILL make it sound/feel worse, but will not have enough drag to make the bike move.
I was sitting beside a Shadow outside my daughter's apt building last year, and kicked it into 1st...clunk...the guy on the Shadow looked at me and said "What was that?"
