Now that the frontend is done, I want to move on to the controls. I have decided to do away with the stock black and go chrome.
The HD brand are about $340.00 through zanottis.
Can anyone reccomend other brands that are good quality.
My only concern with using "cheaper" brands is that I don't want to skimp on a part that is responsible for 60% of my stopping power(master cylinder).
Please give me your reccomendations, opinions, experiences etc.
I felt the same way when I was looking to change the housings. I purchased aftermarket two times and really didn't like them. First off they never seemed to fit tight and leave gaps between the halves. The clamps also seem to strip out very easy.
Next time I think I will have my spare black housing chromed and as far as the master cylinder, there is a cover you can use that look great. That way I'll have HD parts and pay much less.
Anyway, I don't know who's aftermarket is good to use. I bought them all on Ebay and they didn't have a name on them.
I have put on several sets of chrome controls from Cycle Supply over the years with never a problem. Mine are going on 8 years old and still look great. They are sold by other retailers and usually labeled as Midwest brand.
I had a set from the CCI catalouge on my 03 Deuce. I had to replace the Piston and seals after a couple of months. Looks like some **** got in there. Never had another problem for the next couple of years and rode evey day.
Bought a set off e-bay for my 07 ride. Master is exactly the same in looks as origonal and have not had a problem with it. The Switch housings do not have a screw hole in top and look alot better IMO than the OEM item. The one thing I don't like is the levers. They seem to have a sharper edge to them and not as thick as origonal.
Also on the 07 model they have the clutch switch. The kit I bought said 07 but no hole for clutch switch in housing. Took me about 5 minutes to drill and the switch went straight in . The other problem with the levers is that the OEM has that bit to operate the switch which the chome one in the kit did not. No problem unless U want to start your bike in gear. Need to be in nuetral to start.
I am going to have the origonal levers chromed. $50AUD at a good chromer. I am thinking about getting the origonal master cylinder chromed as well. just as a spare. The OEM clutch bracket is crap with joint marks etc. Would not be worth chroming.
I have a custom chrome set. they seem to work fine the breakes feels the same as the orginal. My wife got them for me off ebay, new, for my birthday. I think she paid about $200 for them.
I put custome chrome on mine and my stepdad's bike and liked them. The levers do seem to have a sharper edge on the back and we had to drill the hole for the clutch switch on his 08 but other than that they fit and look very good. Mine were $200 on ebay because I got the switch kit and I think he said about $150 for his without the switch kit because he had the chrome switch covers from harley.
