Chrome trans interface cover kits
Hey all, I am trying to install the chrome transmission-interface cover extension kit ( kit number 66139 )and the chrome tranmission-interface cover kit (66508), is there a secret to the bottom Hex head fasteners under the bearing housing assembly? Or do I have to remove part of the stock exhaust system to get to it properly, I mean after all , how in the world if I do find a allen wrench to get to it, how will I ever apply 13-16 ft lbs of torque to make sure it is tight again? Should I drop the exhaust system is my question/ or is there a secret to doing this easier?
I haven't had to do this yet but I read in a few places where you can cut an L shaped allen wrench off at the short end just enough to get it into the bolt head. Break them loose and back them out by hand.
I haven't heard how to get the 13-16 lbs of torque but you might try this:
Snug all bolts down by hand. Tighten two or three in a row down to the proper torque.
Take the allen wrench and get 'feel' for how tight they are and how much force is needed to loosen them and tighten them.
Thighten them again with the torque wrench to the proper setting and practice a few more times until you feel comfortable with it.
Overtightening may strip out the threads in the case and undertighting may cause leaks and the possibility of the vibrating out.
Or you can remove the exhaust and use the torque wrench (maybe the best way for us non-professional wrenches).
Blue locktite may be in order here.
Let us know how you do it. I'm thinking about the EZ pull clutch kit from H-D. I'll have to remove the right side tranny cover for that as well.
Good Luck

Let me know how the ez clutch install goes, stay in touch at erh320@netzero.net
Yes, you are going to have to drop the exhaust. No way around it. Not just for the screw but for clearance for the cover. You don't have to completely remove the exhaust just loosen it enough to get it out.
