Default battery not charging???

My dad was riding his '98 heritage last weekend and the headlight started getting dimmer, then the bike quite on him.&nbsp\\; the battery seems fine, it's just not charging.&nbsp\\; i checked the wiring, and it all seems to be secure.&nbsp\\; i talked to another guy and he said the it could be he stator plate.&nbsp\\; i guess im just wondering what i should do to narrow down the problem.
thanks for any input.

Well your options are limited to the voltage regulator or the stator assy. There is a diagnostic procedure the eliminates the regulator from the charging system and measures output from the stator. You will have to get a service manual for your bike and follow the diagnostic steps to find your problem.&nbsp\\;

How old is the battery?&nbsp\\; Charge it with a battery charger, then see if it will hold 12.4 volts.&nbsp\\; It could be the stator or regulator, but they are fairly tough hardware, whereas the battery and connections are weak points.

manual will tell you how to test stator and regulator. if one or the other is out you should replce both , as one going out can take out or severly weeken the other. also if your stator drum magnets have any small chips in them, you should replace that too. Mine went out last year @ 62,000 miles. battery is very easy to test with ohm meter.
