Default baisley spring help?

o.k. fellas.. im installing this spring. the directions say to disasemble the chain tensioner to get to the plunger. my main question is do i need to unload/ lock out the tensioner shoe before i remove the c-clip?

I put one in my 88B on a 05 Heritage. Didn't have to do anything with the shoe.
