Default backfiring

I have an '04 FXSTI. It has been dynotuned and runs great. I got stuck in stop and go traffic recently, and it was hot out to begin with. After the traffic broke, the bike backfired on decel several times. We parked and went about our business, then when we came back I started her up and the backfiring did not recur throughout the rest of the trip. It has not happened since. Is this normal when the engine gets really hot? Also, what over symptoms may there be to tell me that it is time to pull over and cool off for a bit. This is my first experience with an air/oil cooled engine.
Thanks for your help

A "back fire" really means that the engine is firing back thru the intake due to over rich condition as in full choke and improper timing. This condition is hard to acheive on modern motor cycles. You refering to decel poping out of the exhaust. This is normally caused bt unburnt fuel being ignited after it leaves the combution chamber. This could be agrivated by air entering the exhaust thru a leak in the flange gasket. The extera heat you encounterd may have caused a small temporary leak as after it returned to "normal" operating temps the problem went away. Suggest you check torque on exhust and tighten if needed.

The first thing I would check is the spark plug, just my 2 cents

Just went through a similar event, check for any vacum leaks, the back fire could have lossened or blown out&nbsp\\;the intake seals on your wish bone also ckeck all vacum lines. good luck andy
