Default Lower Fork Sliders

This weekend, I replaced the lower fork sliders on my 2005 Softail Custom with chrome ones and a chrome dust cover. Kinda spruces up the front of the bike.

Point of the post, I have the old sliders so if any of you Night Train guys wanted to take them and have them powdercoated, they are available. I'll let them go for $25 plus shipping.

According to the part number, they fit 2000 - 2006 FX Softails.

The exchange was pretty easy. The instructions that came with the new sliders weren't much help. They referenced the service manual but fortunately, I had one. It took me several hours, but if I did it again, I could probably do it in about 45 minutes. Amazing thing to me though, the allen head bolt on the bottom of the sliders that frees the dampener is #6 metric. Had one so all was good.

Oldgeezer, when you re-installed the 6mm screw at the bottom of the slider, did the damper tube it screws into spin at all? Thanks.

No, the slider tried to turn but I was able to hold a back up on it where the fender mounts with a thick cloth and a loose fitting pipe wrench. According to the manual, they suggest using an impact wrench but I would be afraid of stripping either the bolt or the dampner threads.

oldgeezer, I am in the garage as we speak replacing the sliders on my 07 FXSTC. The dustcover looks like it just prys off with a little help from a flat tip screwdriver. Looks like I may damage the dustcover getting them off. Looks like new covers are $20, but using the old ones would save for a few beers. Can you tell me how you got them off? Or is it easier to just get them off and buy new ones? Thanks

Seaslugg, just use the flat tipand pry them up a little. Then just push them off. I've taken mine off several times and never replaced them. They're pretty tough.
