If you're not worried about pissing Momma off: steal or borrow her flexible cutting board. Works great to channel the oil into a pan and keeps everything neat. Actually, steal is better. They're only a couple of bucks and you're not going to want to eat anything cut on it afterwards.

Bad advice. You should always "prime" yer filter before ya install it.

It's not necessay, but if you intend to keep your bike for a long time like I do, you're better off in the long run to fill the filter about half way (don't forget to rub a bit of oil on the rubber ring) before installing the filter.
This way the oil gets to your engine faster on the initial startup after the oil change (or "priming" as TequilaJohn says).

It looks like whichever method I use I'll have some cleaning up to do. Oh well, I'll be saving some $$
