Get the filter funnel from HD. It doesn't work but put it in place and punch 2 holes in the filter. One on the lowest part to drain and another up high for air. It helps but you'll probably still spill a little. I also use a environment friendly degreaser and spay the hell out the engine under the filter then hose it off right after the oil change.

Good luck with that....less mess if you do it on the side stand.....but I never do....tried filter funnel, aluminum wrap, cardboard but still get oil dripping down from the back of the filter....worse now that I have a Jagg oil filter adaptor on there.....save you oil changes for when your bikes dirty and needs a bath, change the oil/filter and then wash it.....

Oh, I have a permanent oil filter so I can't punch holes in it but with the regular filter, that method does work well.

HDs oil filter funnel works great. I get little to no mess using their oil filter funnel, and low profile drain pan.

I loosen the filter...slip a quart sized zip lock over it...and spin it off. Wipe up the few drops with a shop rag.

I plan my oil changes so the night before the planned change after a ride I take the oil drain plug out and let the oil drain overnight. This seems to let some of the oil from the filter drain. I use K&N filters because I like the built in 17mm removal nut on its end of the filter, easy to remove. When taking off the filter I simply jam a full page width of multiple pieces of news paper under the filter, kind of like a big funnel placing the drain pan at the newspapers end to collect any leakage.
I usually end up with very little to no mess.
I have tried lots of different ways of removing the oil filter without making a mess the described method Works for me.

I hate the location of the tranny plug on the new style frame haha. My 08 was way better. My 13 drains fine till it's almost empty then it runs down the frame. What a pain. I want a table lift with a drop out middle section haha.
