Default oil filter

i was at auto zone today to buy a cap wrench for my oil filter. i took in a new filter in the box with me to find the right size (i found the right size, came home and cut a hole in the side of it for the sencor and it worked great). while i was in there the parts guy said let me see if i can cross reference that filter for you. so he typed in the part number on the box and it came up with an stp filter. stp s3614 it is the same filter as the one my 03 night train takes. i was wondering if anyone has used one of these since they are only $3.49. i've also heard bosch 3330 filters and Purolator makes a filter that is the same as the harley one too. has one of used any of these???
and i've heard that champion also makes the H-D's oil filters. anyone else heard that??

Hmm, a wise man once told me......... "Good is not cheap and cheap is NOT good"
Food for thought.
I use the HD filters. Superstitious I guess.

I agree an off the shelf filter may not meet specs (good idea on checking crazyb). I'm sure there are some quality alternative filters out there (Amsoil maybe?). Skimp on flowers for your wife before skimping on bike parts.

I have been using Amsoil 20/50 vtwin in engine & primary and 75/110 severe gear in tranny for almost 15000 miles on my 07 fxst all the time using the amsoil filter. one day i was doing some work on the bike and noticed the manual says that all HD filters are filtered down to 5 microns, so i looked at an extra filter i have from amsoil and it only filters down to 15 micron. So, with that little peace of knowledge im now going to use the HD filters.

I wouldn't use any filter but the HD. As stated above they filter 5 microns. You won't find that in an after market filter. If you do, by chance, it will cost as much as a HD filter. Some things just aren't worth scrimping on and an oil filter is one of them.

I like the logic on the filter before flowers

As for the micron rating, 5 is pretty small for a full flow filter. This may be stated as nominal and not absolute. I know on the wix auto filters some say 8 micron nominal, but they are only 20-25 absolute.
5 absolute would be pretty restrictive.

It's just a play on words.
