I swapped out the primary cover on my XBones last night. While doing so, one of the things I had to install inside the new cover was a long, large headed bolt that runs approximately in the center of the cover. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it's purpose is, as I can't really see what it does.
Im not sure the difference's between an 07-08-and 09 but here is a diagram of what an 07 looks like. are you talking about the sealing fastener #5 in the diagram?
AK47, no. I am talking about a bolt which goes into the primary COVER, but which would line up pretty close to the area you have indicated. The bolt in question screws into the inside of the cover and is about 2" long. It has a large diameter Torx head on it. It doesn't hold anything and stands off the inside of the cover about 2". I have the service manual and it neither shows the inside of the cover nor mentions this bolt. I thought initially that perhaps it was there as a last resort "noise" indicator for a flapping primary chain, or even to partially block the seal area you asked about in your post. I'm stumped, as I can't imagine the MoCO wasting $0.15 on an unneccessary bolt.
Hmmmmmm Ya my manual does not say anything about any bolts on the inside of the primary cover either? Was it on the stock one you took off or just the new one? There has to be a reason for that bolt, it is wracking my brain. lol. I think you may be in the right direction that it will partially block the sealing fastener. I know when i replaced the primary cover on my buds RK there were no such bolt. Sorry im not much help.
Best advice would be, if it was there before it should be there now. It's gotta be there for a reason. Unless your new primary is a different THICKNESS, I WOULD MEASURE THIS OR CHECK OUT THE SPECS.
Oh, its definitely still there, I took it out of the original cover and put it into the exact same place on the new one. I was just trying to understand what it does.
Sorry i cant help you with that tech question, it must serve a purpose though. Otherwise it wouldn't be there, only a true tech i guess could give you the real answer. GOOD LUCK
i have done the exact same mod on my xbones. all i did was take the old cover of and put the new one on. just took out the screws on the cover and put them back in with the new part. never even noticed the bolt your talking about. bikes absolutely fine
07 and 08 primary casing is different they changed the engine in 08 to 1584cc
