I have an 05 Fatboy.
About 15,000 miles on it.
Rear tire is in need of replacement. Front tire still has a lot of tread on it.
My dealer told me I had to change them as a set.
Can just the rear be changed without any concerns with handling, or, should both be changed together?
Thanks,
Jeff
I just tried to get an inspection sticker yesterday and found that the front tire wouldn't pass. It has about 17,000 miles on it and it is lookin pretty worn.
The back tire is still fine.
I made an appointment for a new front tire and an inspection sticker for next Friday.
I just changed my rear tire last year at about 12,000 miles. I still have the OEM front on with about 17,000 miles and still looking good. No problems changing the rear only.
I figure I will maybe change both when the rear wears out again.
Dont change it until you need it.

I've got about 18K on my original front tire. I'm on my 3rd rear tire. When that one wears down I'll probably be due for a front. It's pretty common to go through 3 rear tires for every one front tire. I hope you misunderstood the service guy cuz what he said is a bald face lie. Personally, I would inform the owner the store of what happened. If it were my business I would want to know if my employees were screwing the customers around.
Yeah shop around. Try http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ . Great price and free shipping. I just bought a new Dunlop 200mm rear for 146.00, took the old tire off myself and the Honda dealer up the street mounted and balanced it for 20 bucks. Its funny when you get a new tire next to your old one, then you realize its bald.
She rides better now.
On 2nd rear, same front, 16.5k will change both around 20. Only thing I would not do is change brand of tires front and rear. my 07 has 402's on front 401's on rear, but both Dunlop.... and came that way....
I hope you have other dealer/indy options. My dealer carries OEM but has not prob mounting something I bring in. I am having the rear rubber replaced with Dunlop Elite 3 240/40/19 VR next month.
I seem to be going through two rear tires for every one front. Dealer said that's common with fat tire bikes.
