Need more Speed?
I just bought a 2001 Softail standard. The previous owner installed 203 cams and a dyno jet kit which makes it great on the highway.
The problem for me is, it doesnt have enough low end speed. My friend just bought an 06 nighttrain. His bike blows mine away off the line. I didnt realize how slow mine was till I rode with him.
Is there anything I can do to keep the high end torque and speed but improve my low end.
I would appreciate any help I can get.
thanks.

Is the night train a stocker? Or a stage 3 sleeper?
When you say the prvious owner installed a set of 203 cams and a "Dyno Jet Kit" it makes me wonder what you mean?
Was the bike tuned on a dyno with an aftermarket jet kit?
What pipes are on the bike? What airfilter?
A poorly tuned/jetted stage 1-2-3 bike will get lanced off the line by a stock EFI bike if the carbed bike isnt jetted correctly.
So what can you do to pick up more low end speed?
Make sure the bike is correctly jetted and has strong compression.
Spend a few hundred bucks and get it professionally dialed in(Jetted on a dyno!) and checked over for acceptable compression.
If your buddy is a on box stock 96' Night Train and you know how to ride your bike you should lance him off the line and through all the gears. It shant be much of a race if your bike is "Right".

As for the pipes I have Screaming Eagle 11. Im wanting to get Vance and Hines big radius but Im not sure if that going to help me as far as performance.
I have a K and N air filter also.
As far as it being tuned, I would love to go get it on the dyno, I just dont have the case just yet. I still have to pay my property tax as well as sales tax to get it registered first

Normally you can have top end horsepower or low end torque. Hard to get both.
The bike comes off the line stronger than horsemeat and busts the tire loose at 40+ MPH hitting second gear.
I think its an urban legend to think that cant have a strong all around Twin Cam harley build that not only is torquey and strong but will a sustained high speed on the interstate all day long. I think Harleys are right there with Small block chevies in terms of how many cam's are available and as far as different combinations via' pipes, head work, different air cleaners I think you would be hard pressed to find any motor manufactured today that has so many wildly different combos.
So I have to agree to disagree. With todays pipe, head, cam combos you can have a torque monster that is also a fast bike on top.

You can pull the plugs and see if its lean or rich or what.
A functinal good clean carb with correct jetting for your pipes and AC is a critical issue.
I would also find someone who knows what they are doing to do a compression test so you dont throw money at the thing buying pipes and crap only to find out you have internal issues.
Until those issues are addressed no one can tell you how to make your bike fast on the internet or in person.
Make sures everything is functioning as it should. If you arent mechanically advanced enough to make that call go pay someone who is.
