Hello. I have an '89 Springer. At start-up I have to hold the oil cap down or it will be blown out and oil will fly out as well. I was told that I have a sumping problem. Is this something I can take care of on my own? I am somewhat mechanically inclined and have the basic tools in my garage. Will I need any special tools? Would changing the oil pump fix the problem? Again, Special tools? Any advise will be appreciated. RJV
Generally sumping means the motor has drawn in too much oil and its collecting in the area around the crank. This would have the oppossite effect of what you are describing as your oil tank is too full and being pressurized to the point of blowing the cap off?
You could try some marvel mystery oil in the engine oil and run it for a few hundred miles and change the oil and filter. It could be sediment causing a problem in a check ball or valve.
Short of hoping for an easy fix you should let a qualified guy have a look at the bike as you may be starving the motor for oil and on the verge of siezing it.
To check for a sumping issue yourself if your feeling frisky??
Run engine to operating temp.
then shut down. The left side of the oil pan (under the transmission) the plug is on the front of the pan,the plug on the bottom of the pan on the right side is the transmission drain. It could be a biatch to get out. Dont strip the fvcker.
Measure the oil that comes out.
On a twin cam if more than 6oz. drains then there is a wet sumping issue. I dont know what it is on an Evo but if 10 ounces comes out you can certainly bet yer *** you have a serious sumping issue.
You may have a return line issue, there is a check valve or ball that can go bad as well. I havent had the issue on my bike but logic tells me that if you are blowing oil out of the oil tank fill hole your motor cant be filled with oil?
Doesn't sound like you have a sumping problem, sounds like exactly the opposite. Did you make any changes to the air cleaner right before the problem appeared?
Any chance you pinched or blocked the breather line? I did that once on a Shovelhead and it blew oil out of the pushrod tubes!!!
I did not make any changes, other than cleaning the air filter. I don't think the problem started at that time, it just happened one day and has continued. I'll check the breather line and change the oil. Thanks for the replies. RJV
On my 99 EVO if you took the oil cap out while the bike was running it would spray you with oil. Don't ask me how I know, I just know. If your oil stick is getting old and not fitting as tight as it should you might solve your problem by buying a new one. Just a thought.
