Freeway speed
I try to stay in the left lane for as long as possible(but won't hold anyone up if they come up behind me)
I will get to 80mph, but that is my absolute limit. If someone is coming up behind me at that speed, i will move to the middle than back to the left lane.
I completely agree with you that this way you only have to worry about them coming from your right side...
I am always watching the cars in front of me that are in the middle lane as I approach them. looking so see if they are checking their mirrors meaning they are thinking about coming over to my lane. I also try my best to stay of of blind spots of cars that are in the middle lane...
Carmell, I don't know how you survive on the interstates in SoCal :-0
I am lucky to live in the midwest in a cowtown(Columbus, OH). having the 2nd highest number of registered motorcycles of any state, and a smaller car population than CA really helps keep the blood pressure of us bikers down to a reasonable level!

It's all about the buffer zone!
I drive / ride by the energy that I feel around me
I'll pull off the freeway if I feel that there are to many idiots...
give it 5 minutes and get back on to see whats happening...
I'm never in a hurry to get anywhere...

ride the so cal freeways a lot myself and usually am in the 80/100 range any slower you get run over. by the way I am 68 and my need for speed is not gone yet but the wife will usually tell me your going to fast so have to sneak it up
We ride in Washington and Oregon a lot, when on the slab I5, we travell 70+ BUT get passed by a lot of bagger riders, usually in the left or fast lane, often they will not move when a car comes up on them in that lane---We do not like the extreem right lane because it is badly rutted by all the truck traffic. 80 seems to be our limit, although my wife (06 Bob ) seems to like to go fast from time to time, I am done with my "go fast " days, 71 in two weeks.
Since my recent intro. to Harley, I'm a right lane rider. I just enjoy the ride. Coming from rice-rockets (triple digits often), I thought "cruising" would be boring. Not so on this bike. I also enjoy the side roads if things get funky on I-95. I try not to let anything deter my relaxing, enjoyable, no rush cruise. If I'm running late I take the car, sometimes to the trips'.
SoCal freeways are a bitch, there are a couple i just refuse to go on, i will find an alternate route.
I just moved to glendale and i have to say im lovin this 2 freeway its always wide open.
I just try to drive with flow of traffic, usually around 75 - 80 or so, 90 is pushing it i feel like im gonna just slide off the bike...and im always in the left lanes.
then there is the list of idiots to look out for:
they dont see you and merge into your lane
they do see you splitting lanes in their mirror and still cut you off
they want to race you in thier shiny bmw.. wtf
dont tailgate me.. u might catch a bb....
SUV's ... nuff said
im always lookin for my escape route..

In town, in traffic, I ride at whatever speed the surrounding traffic is moving. Usually safest to just move along with the herd. Go slower and you're a hazard, go faster and some a-hole will just pull in your lane anyway. Pick a spot and go with the flow.
Once out of town and away from others I'll ride at whatever speed I feel like at the time.

Trailer, that cracks me up !! What is with those shiney car morons that try to out run you ? Ive seen that so many times and I used to try to show them up, now I just let them get pissed and go around. These freeways out here are just insane at times.

Yea I'm with ya on that, I ride down the fare side of the left lane most of the time when taking the highway route. The biggest thing to watch out for around here during the summer months are them blown out truck tires that seem to be all over the lanes. I35 can be a real experience at times, avoid that highway from Georgetown thur Austin if at all possible.
