Default Question for Springer owners

I'm looking at getting a quick detach windshield for my Springer Classic soon. Read much about buffeting to the head and that this is largely because of the air flow from below the windshield. Does anyone know who makes lowers for springer forks? I saw that Memphis Shades offers lowers but from what I can see their windshield mounting hardware is required for their lowers. I am intersted in the low profile king size HD shield and am looking for independtly mounted lowers in case I need them. Anyone know what's available? Thanks!

Hey Scott you picked a good day to ask . First off I’ve been looking all winter trying to find some lowers for the Springer and I’ve had no luck so far, I did find some for the old style Heritage Springer but nothing for ours. So I said to hell with it, Im a machinists and I do some system design were I work so I decided to design a set for the Springer or any Softail for that matter. I just finished a proto type of the lowers this afternoon. The thing is these lowers don’t mount to the forks they mount to the lower down tubes of the frame and will be quick detach so that if you want to run a clean bike and pull the windshield you will be able to pull the lowers too and it should only take about a minute. Right now I’ve got them set-up for as a ridged mount to the down tubes and am waiting for the weather to clear up some to see if they do what there supposed to. The weather is supposed to clear up some this week and when it does I’ll take em out and see how they work, if they work like Im hoping Im going to start work on the quick detach mount. I’ll let you know how they work as soon as I can test them.

Jon, I know what you mean about nothing being out there. I looked long and hard and wouldn't have asked on here if I had found something. I'm thinking about your design and the downtubes. You got me thinking now. Guess lowers really don't need to be on the forks. But my guess is that the smaller the shield, the further away they are from your body the better. Within reason of course. They create a 'tunnel'. Just like the bugshield on my truck I guess. The upward draft created moves all the air over my windshield. Guess that's not news but the basic principal of how windshield and lowers work. But now you've made me curious. Hope they work out for you. Let me know. I'm definitely interested in the results. I'm a little surprised that the lowers for the heritage won't work for us.

Now I have to ask, do you get buffeting from below? I just installed the passing lamps and could tell a difference of the wind in my face. The lamps seem to direct it right where I don't want it.

Thats were I'm getting the buffeting from is the bottom up. What I'm looking at is if you look at all the baggers Ive never seen one with lowers on the forks there allways on the down tubes maybe it has to do with the faring but I hope it will work with our set-up.

JB this is where I draw the line, I simply cant allow you to operate your gorgeous springer with a windshield any longer, Im sorry but its something I have to do. Remove the windshield at once and we can just call this a warning [sm=crossbonesgif.gif]. Love your bike, it was the first classic I seen I actually liked just as much as my FXspringer. Just hate to see ya cover her up with the windshield. But if you haveeeeeeee to have, I guess we can let it slide for now. [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

To tell you the truth I like better like this too[sm=bustedsign.gif], but when youve 200 mi. to get home and its raining like hell all that extra stuff is sort of nice to have. That's why Ive got the quick detach it's on for the long run's were thing's can get iffy no matter how good it look's when you leave and off the rest of the time.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I get no buffeting at all with the windshield on my Springer Classic. In fact, as the weather is getting hot here, I'll probably be pulling the windshield off, just so I can get some airflow.

This is off topic, but... what kind/style of saddlebags do you have on your springer. They are the type I am looking for. Thanks.

Yeah, I'm hoping I won't need them either. But I want to make sure I can get something that will work for me before I commit to any particular brand windshield. I would hate to spend $300 on a HD shield only to find out I need lowers but none are available. If Memphis Shades is the only option maybe I'll just have to look at their shields along with the hardware for their lowers. All I want it for is for longer trips. Never had one before but I think it will be a good thing for long hauls.
