Default Interchangable Parts

I have searched...and searched but come up empty handed. I would like to know if there is any particluar place I can look to see what parts are interchangable with my bike. I feel like i'm annoying everyone, I'm sure I am, when I ask if particular parts will work. I have even tried going to manufacturer websites to search by my bike specifics and most of the time draw a blank. And by most, I mean 99.9% of the time. I can do it all day long with cars..but harleys seem to be their own entity.

I have an 05 Deuce FXSTDI. I basically want to get away from being the annoying guy who wants a part but has to ask "will this fit my bike?"

Thanks In Advance

-Dan

There used to be a popular book with the title "What Fits What." It dealt exclusively with 1936-84 models and as expected, most everything within reason was interchangeable. With the modern bikes, especially with Twin Cams it is more like the Japanese and parts may vary within a model year run. Probably the best bet is to ask each time you have a question.

The Deuce is a whole different critter. Most softail parts interchange, but the Deuce and the Heritage Springer always seem to say on the package does not fit FXSTD & FLSTS.

Buy a parts manual from the dealer. They are 40.00 or so.That will tell you all softail parts with numbers and models thru code that are interchangeable. You really should have one with your service manual if you do your own work. All parts are in exploded views of assembly procedure.G.

I have a service manual on it's way.

This is why i ask, i may forget the simplest of things. I just thought there was a simpler more lazy way of doing it

Dont forget, just because HD says a part wont fit doesnt mean it wont. If there is any modding required at all to make a part fit, even somethig as simple as putting in a 1/8" longer bolt, HD takes the easy route and just says it wont fit. Heck, Ive got several things Ive added that arnt for my bike and HD says they wont fit.

Ive found a lot of companies are like this too. A good example is I was told by HD parts people, service people, indy shops and Samson customer service the pipes I have wouldnt fit a deluxe. They were designed for either a heritage or fatboy. At the time I was looking the Deluxe was fairly new and apperently no one had fitted them with these pipes, or atleast no one I had talked to. All the bolts and holes are the same so I knew they would fit but I was told several times they wouldnt fit.
