Try leaving the bolts a little loose, until after mounting on the bike.
Then snug up the bolts.

If yours is anything like my 08 stock detachable, I had left all my bolts slightly loose when replacing the shield (reusing the hardware). The plastic part wants to fight the hardware and if you snug it to the shield ahead of time, the hardware will match the shield (rather than the bike mounts).

Don't overtighten the bolts that hold the rubber grommets, then fiddle with the other bolts til it slides in easy. Careful, the shield scratches easy.

It should pop on/off easily and I wouldn't stop til you get it to do so.
You won't regret the extra effort. I pop mine off for baths, or just to wash the windshield real good (without wetting the bike).
It is off very often and I love having the quick release! If it were hard to removem you blow the hole concept.

Be patient, you'll get it right. (make darn sure your pieces are in the order that the instructions called for).

try putting a small amount of liquid soap on the rubber grommets to help the hardware slide on easily

I use silicon spray. I just put a paper towel under each docking port and give real small spray.

You'll be amazed at how easily your shield will pop on and off after that.

I also lube the grommets with dish soap. Mine is still a little snug to get on though.
