I ride an 07 Heritage with V&H 2 into 1 pipes and a stage I tune-up kit. I made a trip from Salt Lake City to PCH in July. My bike started sputtering during the trip. The sputter is not constant and doesn't happen at all at low speeds. But, at higher speeds (75 in 5th gear) my bike starts acting like it's not getting any gas. If I dial the throttle down it runs fine but as soon as I get back on the throttle the sputtering comes back. It's especially bad with 2-up or climbing hills.
I've done some reading in here and here's what I've done to fix the problem. I've changed the fuel tank cap, cleaned the air filter, ran some Gunk jet fuel in one tank, checked and cleaned ALL electrical connections, checked and charged the battery (it was 12.87 volts when I checked it but I threw it on the charger anyway), and I've had the dealer run a diagnostic...its not throwing any codes. They checked the voltage to the throttle position sensor and its not spiking.
I've decided to keep running it until something breaks. At least that way I'll know what the problem is. The latest development is the fuel primer light in the speedo turns back on after I start the bike. It's not on for long, maybe 2 or 3 seconds is all but it hasn't done that before.
It seems to happen more often with a full tank of gas too. I always run 91 octane. Oh yeah, my deceleration pop has gotten worse with the problem.
Someone mentioned back-pressure. What is that?
On the pre 04 they had a problem with the fuel pressure line from the pump/regulator I believe. I wonder whether your problem is fueld pressure related - makes sense as the problem is worse when more fuel is needed due to high load..
Mine just died but restarted fine 3 times last week havent had time to ride since. she had started just fine i garage. If it gets about 55 tomorrow I am taking her out to see.
no codes when I checked her...
update,, wed 30th
it got all the way up to 58, but sunshine with it..
I don't know what caused her to die on me last week but today rode about 45 mins and she was flawless....I did have 1 code B1007, I cleared it before the ride and it didn't reappear.
1st time I've had an issue of motor dying in 3yrs and almost 24k of riding.. (other than a loose bolt on battery cable) thought the reg services would have done that.
Same thing just happened to me and it was as simple as a bad tank of gas. She sputtered at 65 through 3 tanks of gas then cleared up completly. It was that easy.
Might have been gas, the weather has dropped in the 40's last week and that might have done it. moisture in it at the station
I have ridden over 200 miles since and she hasn't so much as spit once. Feeling good now she's back to normal......I did put in bout 3 ozs (Full tank) of lucas injector cleaner for the heck of it..
I had made a post about my bike shutting down when I came off the interstate, 07 Softail completely stock. I called the dealer and the mech said it might be the IAC (Idle Air control valve.) I cleaned it as it's accessable inside the throttle body at 12 Oclock. The thing is it's done it again after the cleaning and I just came back from a 1900 mile trip to Pa and back. On the way back I purposely ran the tank down low, to within the point that a fill up would take 4.2 or more gallons.( It did it once before when a fill up was about 4.3 gallons.) Anyway, the low fuel light came on just before the exit to Decatur, Ill. where I was going to get gas. Within a minute the bike faltered, sputtered but I made it off the exit to a gas station and filled it. 4.7 gallons. So, this was happening only when the tank was low. I called a mech at Worth H-D in KCMO. He told me he had seen, on one or two bikes, a pin hole rubbed in the fuel line that connects the fuel pump inside the gas tank. So what happens is that when the fuel level drops below the pin hole the fuel pump sucks air and pressure lessens to the injectors and the bike quits, etc. He said it could be a clogged fuel filter, which the recommend replacing a 25,000. SO what sucks is my bike ran out of warranty in June. So, I am going to inspect this and I'll publish the results. I will let H-D know about it, too. We shall see, we shall see. PS. One time, when the bike was new I was having such a good time on the Ohio Turnpike I forgot about gas. When I realized I was in trouble I was lucky to be by a service center. The bike took 4.9 gallons. So they will run dry if you're dumb enough to forget about looking at the fuel guage!!!!!!!!!!!! My bike has 29,500 on it.
