How many change all 3 holes every service? I have noticed when I change mine the tranny oil looks as clean as when I put it in and the primary is dirty! I think I am going to start changing the tranny oil evry other time. And I don't think it is necessary to replace the primary gasket that HD charges $10 for every time .
I agree. I never change the gasket and it still looks brand new. I have found that both the tranny and primary oils always look clean. I'm starting to wonder if the primary ever really needs changing. All it does is oil the clutch and chain and never seems to get very hot. I think this coming year I'll only change the engine oil and keep an eye on how the others look.
I change the oil in all 3 holes every time, but have often wondered whether the primary is really necessary every time. Only change gaskets and o rings if they look like they need it - usually not.
I changed the motor oil and have 500 miles on the change and I ordered a quart of RedLine GEAR OIL HVY SHK PROOF for the tranny and 20W50 MOTOR OIL 1-QT for the primary yesterday from Summit Racing and it was delivered today 1 day service.I am not going to change the primary and tranny at next oil change this is the first time trying the RedLine!
Viscosity cannot be seen. i.e. how slick oil is. With temp changes and with particles being added with wear the lube becomes less slick. The cost is little compared to the damage and wear it can and will do.
Yeah I had a girlfriend who let her primary oil go 2 years because it only oils the chain and clutch. I did all three holes for her last spring. The primary oil looked like dirty milk. We live in a pretty dry climate too. That's moisture, not too good on anything in there. The tranny oil always looks as clean as when it went in but if you had it analyzed you'd see that the molecules have "sheared." I don't think 10,000 miles is excessive on primary or tranny IF you use a decent oil and as long as you change it at least annually. In cold weather riding the oil gets heated and when the air in there cools condenstion occurs. It takes a few miles to evaporate that moisture out of your fluids. Water in your oil isn't cool. But it's your bike not mine.
