You are in for a treat!! I basically took mine apart trying to find the screw that holds the backrest in place! Took awhile to figure out how to even get the backrest pad off!
After all is said and done, it's not possible to remove it unless you destroy it completely! I verified that at the dealer!!! At least I know how to get the pad off now (you just spin it off).
This was not one of Harley's better designs! If someone found a way please let me know!

How much did it end up costing you? wait it's HD Hundred Dollar. That's what I did spin it off! Should had left it alone.
You are right I took a heat gun and heated the leather insert up and it pulled right off and went back on with ease can't even tell it was ever off.
Wow, who would have thought!! I'll try that but I don't have a heat gun. Maybe a hair drier will do the trick. It's fine, I didn't damage it but would be nice to get the leather piece off and put it on my current backrest.

It didn't take much a hair dryer will do just fine! when you go to to put the leather insert back in heat the big piece of 2 sided pad up first .
