I have an opportunity to buy a 2007 Softail Custom at a decent price but if I remember correctly, there were some problems (recalls) on the new 96 engine that year. Can anyone tell me what the problem was, and if it was taken care of through a recall?
I got 2 recall bullitens.. The 1st was a remap and 2nd was a weld around the battery box wasnt up to par on some of the models. Im thinking the remap was for improved mileage, its been 3 years so cant remember.. But ive had no probs outta my 07 Nightrain got it as soon as the 07's came out.
One of the other "problems" that people were complaining about was the noise the 6 speed transmission made due to the different cut on the 5th gear. Some people had the noise while others did not. Some were happy, others were not. You might want to ride and see how 5th gear sounds.
The remap fix was called a torque download, the other fix was about how the positive battery cable was run. No recalls on the engine itself. I have had no problems with my 07 custom.
I didn't notice any difference after the remap and I fixed the battery cable a month before I recieved my letter about the battery cable. Thanks to this forum!
Note: The 5th gear noise on mine went away after a few thousand miles.

Reason: Added note.
The early 07's had some inconsistencies in chamber volume and deck hight, but all that did was rob power. There were some reported deck hights in the teens. (.017 down the hole).
The two recalls on the '07 were for a new software download for some kind of "torque management" BS. I never had mine done, I'll handle my torque my own way, thank you very much HD!!.
The other recall was for the battery cables. The positive battery cable was run too tight and laid too tightly against the frame or battery box in places. The cable could (and in some cases did) wear through its insulation and ground out, causing fire and a bad case of roasted nuts. I wanted to avoid this problem so I had mine fixed, but I made damn sure the dealer left their filthy hands off of my bike for the torque management software recall crap. The bike ran awesome and there was no way I wanted them to mess that good thing up!
