Default Garmin 660 vs. Tom Tom XL 340S?

Anyone have an opinion on these 2 GPS units? The Garmin costs about $750 and the Tom Tom is only $120 at Staples right now. So long as I keep it out of the rain... any reason to spend the extra money on the Garmin or will the Tom Tom do pretty much what I need. Which is get me from point A to Point B without getting too lost?

I like getting lost on my bike, one of the main reasons to have one IMO..

Any GPS will do, the simpler the better because you can't mess around with them while you are riding. I got my Daughter a Garmin you can talk to and tell it where you want to go for 2 and small change, works like a charm. You can't really compare the two you listed unless you think it's fair to compair a Yamaha to a Harley, or why do I need a BMW when a Corolla will get me there..

Get the cheaper one and be happy..

A quick comparison:

Garmin Zumo 660: "Designed By Bikers For Bikers - Featuring a bright 4.3” touchscreen color display, the zūmo 660 puts all the information you need in an easy-to-read format as you travel down the road. The zūmo 660 also has a glove-friendly intuitive interface that makes entering information as easy as shifting gears. In addition, the wide sunlight-readable display makes for easy navigation — whether you’re riding during a bright day or a moonless night. And with a rugged waterproof case that resists fuel sprays and UV rays, the zūmo 660 was built for life on the road." Cost $799.95

Tom Tom XL 340s: This product was not designed for motorcycles and is for use in automobiles. Cost $159.95

It is like comparing apples and oranges. A fairer comparison would be with the Tom Tom Rider.

Tom Tom Rider 2nd Edition:
"Designed with bikers in mind: rugged and waterproof, TomTom RIDER comes with RAM mounting hardware that fits almost any bike and a Cardo scala-rider® wireless headset for high quality voice instructions inside your helmet.
User-friendly: award-winning easy-to-use software, quick destination selection. Just plug it in, switch it on and riiiiide!
Great biking experience: door-to-door navigation anywhere in the US and Canada with crystal-clear 3D graphics and smooth-scrolling map display.
Safe & secure: simplified drive-mode instructions on a glove-friendly touchscreen. Securely docked on the world’s leading motorcycle mount.
Smart services & extras: plan your route itinerary on your PC, keep in touch with fellow bikers on the road, and much more. " Cost $649.95

Can't help with a comparison. Have the Garmin 660 and really like it. If you're just looking to get from point A to B without any frills, get the Tom Tom.

Well I really enjoyed my 660. I let my wife borrow it for a trip in the cage, yep she lost it, been looking for months.

The Garmin is a far superior unit for motorcycles and upgrades are affordable, I have had both and the TOM TOM upgrades were as much as a new TOMTOM. Plus, Garmin is a USA company (KC, MO) and TOM TOM is European.

Personally I would say go for the tom tom, but as pointed out above, there is a major diff in the why the Garmin displays information. The garmin is optimized towards fast easy viewing more suitable to riding while the tom tom is a more tradition map display that cagers get.

I first ran a Magellan cheapo that I ran on the bike. Caught in a rain storm and thought I killed it. Cleaned it out and all working accept the touch screen.Still working today just not used on the bike.
Purchased a Garmin Zumo 550 and love it. Comes with a car bracket and a bike bracket but I didn't use the bike bracket, fabbed my own. I have a fuse power wire ran up to the mount that turns on with the key. Also under the tank to under the seat a head phone jack to listen to tunes. The Zumo 550 has a media player. Other nice features too.
I don't know what the TOM TOM is your looking at but I recomend finding one at least designed for elements if you choose to go less expensive then a Zumo series Garmin, 550's can be found in the low 600's, not sure about 450's.
Here is a reasonable priced 450 http://salestores.com/garmin45.html . I have never ordered from that site so no idea how quick they are or how customer support is either.

GPS is nice in a jet. Haven't found a need for it on the ground yet. I don't think I'd want to mess with it on a bike anyway.
