Default Garmin GPS vs smartphone iMAP

Two questions:

Do smart phones with iMaps and Google make Garmin GPS finders irrelevant?

Do we really need a $700 Zumo or would a $100 Garmin nüvi 65LM work just as well (not waterproof but remove when not in use.)?

In my opinion phones are not specialized for GPS usage. While they may do the trick to find your way to the hotel I don't think they do near as good overall as a dedicated (Garmin or Tom Tom).

I ran a cheap Garmin on the bike for years. Wrapped it in a baggie when it rained. The baggie kept the GPS reasonably dry, but I couldn't read it worth a darn. Also the cheap ones (and phones) are unreadable in the glare of the sun.

Finally I broke down and bought a Tom Tom Rider. The Rider cost 1/3 less than the made for bikes Garmins and I love it. 100% waterproof and the screen is readable (mostly) even in the worst glare. Worth the extra money!

This past weekend I stumbled across an app for my phone called CoPilot GPS (I have an Android phone)
You download maps, I downloaded US and Canada. 2.4Gig
You do not need cell data to work. But you can have it enabled for traffic and weather.
Lots of pretty cool features, poi lists, some cost money, some don't.
Not sure if this was talked about on here but thought I would share.
Still messing with it so can't give it a fair review.
