Default Need Help with NIKON Settings

I recently picked up a new NIKON Camera (D5000) But it seems the settings are a bit off. My file images are HUGE!!!!!! The pics are coming out great, but They are taking forever to load and taking up all my memory.

What settings should I use where I can get the same quality pics but with normal file sizes ???

Thanks

You might have the image quality setting to RAW which would give you huge files.
You could change to JPEG Fine or Superfine and also reduce the Image Size to small or medium. Even JPEG Normal should yield good results.

I just got one of those today. Look on the camera's retouch menu for the small picture option to resize. You can make them real small.

You dont need real large files to load on the web to look good. Set the camera on the lowest settings or just use a photo program to shrink the ones you have, most programs have a JPEG setting to post on th web and it will do it for you

Don't shoot RAW. That will just frustrate you as a new user. You can change both the file SIZE and the QUALITY that the camera "records" in the menu system, but I don't recommend that either unless you know for sure you are only going to post online. If you want to print later, you won't have enough pixels for printing.

Here's a simple rundown;
1) On your computer, create a new folder for PHOTOS, or use something like "My Photos" folder. You'll want to create and name a new sub-folder for each different set of photos you take (before downloading to the computer) - over time that will make them easier to locate.

2) If you don't have one yet, get a card reader that plugs into a USB port on your computer - downloads to your computer and much faster than plugging the camera in. Remove the card from the camera, put in card reader and download to the NEW folder on your computer.

3) Set your camera to highest JPeg settings, that way you'll have full use of that file for printing if you ever choose to later.

4) After downloading to your new folder, create another sub-folder like "Web". Then review and select the full size photos you want to post and downsize those to that folder.

5) Downsizing (resampling) is fairly easy. The best size for computer viewing (and uploading) is roughly 800x600. Much bigger and they will not fit on forum pages well, much smaller and they loose visual appeal.

In Windows you can simply open the full size folder, select multiple images for downsizing (email), then choose the new sub-folder "web" to save them to. I'm not going into details because its all available on the left of the screen in Windows to figure out. If you can change oil in your bike, you can figure this out easily. You can also use other software programs like came with your camera, or get Adobe Elements, etc. All will do the same thing with a fairly easy learning curve.

This may sound complex, but it is quite easy and straightforward once you do it a few times.
