Question Painted fork sliders now TOO shiney!

Howdy Folks...

I finished up (last night) with the last application of clear coat on my fork sliders. After about 12 hours dry time... WOW do they shine!! Meaning they look wet and are dry to the touch. The problem here is that the sliders now out-shine the other black parts and frame. Oops....

I'm almost sure the clear coat will "lay down" a bit more over time, but the shine is blinding. More coats of anything is not an option as I've had to take down my "make shift" spray booth.

What do you suggest I do to "knock" that shine down, just a little bit so it matches the rest of the bike?

No picture yet... I have to wait for my neighbor to bring his digital camera over. I tried with my cell phone and that didn't work out very well...

When I would finish a piece of furniture I always finish it in gloss, then when it was dry I'd knock the shine down with 0000 steel wool to give it a satin sheen. That way I could control the "glossiness" from the wet look all the way down to flat.

I left you a message and am waiting for you to call back Dan. Too shiny is good on a Harley.

Probably not...is it automotive clearcoat with hardener? If it is you can wet sand it with 2000 grit sandpaper, then "buff it" by hand till it gets to the shine you want...if you buff it with a buffer it will be as shiny as it is now but it will have a little less of a wet look.

Nope... Nothing that professional. Captain Rattle Can at your service. Here;s the basic procedure I followed...

- I first cleaned the sliders VERY WELL. They were spotless!!
- Sanded with 400 to "rough up" the sliders, then another cleaning.
- Applied two light coats dark gray primer. Wet sanding with 600 between coats.
- Applied three coats gloss black. Wet sanding with 1000 between coats.
- Applied final coat gloss black. Wet sanded with 1500.
- Applied three coats of clear. Wet sanding with 1500 between coats.
- Applied final coat of clear... And TA-DA!!!! Too shiney. LOL!!

After sitting for a while, some of the "sheen" has come down. But they are still really bright. Maybe I should add more chrome to balance things out...

I think it was all the wet sanding that you did
