Just wondering how many of you have done this yourself and if it's worth it. Looking at the manual, looks like a pretty major teardown. If you did it, was it a major PITA? Should I just go with a cover?
its NOT hard, just time consuming.i would suggest a whole bike lift jack if available, cause its gonna take you 3-4 hours but the result is unlike no other.i cant find my pics of mine and my bikes getting cams so it aint here so i cant show you a picture at this time.i have seen bikes with the kurakyn cover and i think it looks horrible but thats me
I've got the inner chromed...I like it better than the cover. The cover looks good, but it's no match for the real deal. It's just the real deal is a lot more money and a little work to install.
I tried to find a good picture of the inner on my bike but this is the best I could find...hope this helps.

yeah, that's pretty much what I expected to hear. Not sure if I'm confident enough in my wrenching skills yet, but warming up to it. Anybody got a good shot of a cover? BTW, JayDee-- your ride is tight.

Not impressed with the inner being chromed, but had mine off before.
If I did want it chromed, I dang sure would swap the inner before I'd do a cover on it. The cover helps retain more heat, and looks like a cover.
Do the swap, or leave it alone. Covers look like,.... well,.... they look like covers.
After the swap, be prepared to do more wiping and cleaning to keep it looking right. The smudges show and there is more stuff to detail.
You asked,..... you got my opinion.

I see what you mean Dr. V. Looks a little off. I might try to tackle the tear down, but seems like every time I touch the bike I screw something up! For instance, couple days ago I tried to polish my outer primary cover bolts. Took them out one by one, polished, carefully re-torqued. They came out great, but just got back from a ride and I've got primary oil seeping out.

Did not see that coming...
Ouch! You should have gotten away with the one by one thing.
