Default 2000 Fatboy electrical

My buddy and I were out riding one evening a few weeks ago. We were approaching a stop sign and his Fatboy started back firing, flames shooting out of the exhaust and the electrics went dead. He said that is exactly what happened the time his stator went out. He took my bike and went and got his trailer and we trailered it home. He went out and tried to start it a few days later and it fired right up and he has ridden it several times sense with no problems. We have no idea what happened. If anyone can point us it the right direction as what happened we would appreciate the help.

I have had plates come loose in a battery and short out the battery. One second everything is normal...hit a bump everything electrical is dead...hit another bump everything is normal. Rare and a pain to troubleshoot. One direction to look.
