What's this Amsoil I'm hearing so much about? Is it motor oil, tranny oil, what is it? My bike is reaching 1000 miles. I feel I should use this magical oil for my first oil change. Any responses appreciated
They make all three. I use 75-90 in my tranny, 20-50 in my engine and 10-40 in my primary. I converted to Amsoil at 1000 miles. Used it in bikes before, works good for me.
Synthetic man, Amsoil is a good syn oil for bike's, so is Mobil1 V-Twin, they also say that Redline is ok but I haven't heard of anyone using it so I can't say on that one but I have Amsoil in my bikeand I really like the way it works in the clutch side, feels a little better than the Mobil1 did, anyway give it a try, I think you'll like it and it's not any higher than the SEoil that's not a true syn anyway.
Where can I buy this Amsoil? Do they sell it at Harley Dealers.
Like Tn said above, there are a number of good synthetics out there. Most Harley dealers will not sell anything other than Harley oil. Find a local bike shop and use what they carry. If they stock Mobil and not Amsoil, use Mobil, etc, etc, etc...
I've run Amsoil and Mobil 1 V-twin and can't tell the difference between them. I normally run Mobil 1 since I can buy it at Wallyworld and it's less expensive than Amsoil. I run Redline Shockproof Heavy in my transmission, Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50 in the primary and crankcase.
Whether Amsoil is available at your Harley shop depends on the shop. Most other non-HD bike shops sell Amsoil though.
I don't sell Amsoil so don't get the wrong idea but I use it in everything my bike, truck, car, snowmobile and even my lawn mower. Been using it for years and I'll swear by it. And according to Michigan State University testing Amsoil is right at the top and Harley is way down there. No Harley won't sell Amsoil but jump on the web Amsoil has a web page. I buy mine from a farm supplier named Fleet Farm.
I also switched over to amzoil at the 1000 mile mark 20/50 in the motor 10/40 in the primary and 75/90 grar lube in the tranny The Harley shop where I bought my bike did the 1000 mile check and oil changes and they also happen to carry the amzoil but its about a doller a quart cheeper at mills fleet farm then it is at the Harley store. Its good oil you should give it a try!
