Default New Paint or Swap Tins?

Finally saved up enough cash to paint my FatBoy. Decided to take a quick look at the dealer to see what they had for pre-painted tins for grins.

He's got a used set of tins from a 105th Anniversary FatBoy that he' sell me for about $500 less than I can get mine painted. I like the look, but was concerned about re-sale value. I don't plan on selling the FatBoy soon, but will likely sell it when it gets high mileage...

Looking for opinions here. If I put a 105th Anniversary tin set on a bike that is not the 105th Anniversary edition, would re-sale value be less than if I were going to paint it a solid color (orange or yellow most likely)?

Personally, I like to copper and black as much as the single solid color I was planning on going with.

Whatcha think?

Reckon that means original paint/tins yield the highest resale value?

Default new paint or swap tins

take your tank and fenders off and have them painted the way you want....why worry what color the next owner will want......and why hold your stock set unless you have a classic bike......the next guy that owns your bike will be buying it because he likes the color or he'll repaint.....

Once the bike is a few years old and has high miles it probably wont matter what color it is. One guy might like the factory paint the next might like the same as you the next might not like either. I say keep the factory tins just in case you ever decide to change it back.

I doubt any different paint will ADD value, and the wilder/ more non-mainstream your choices are, the less re-sale market you'll see.

BUT, it's yours and if you want it, go for it and dont worry about re-sale.

I like the coppertop look my buddies got also and tried to swap tins with him once, thought they'd look killer on a train, but do you want to make your bike look older than it is?

I bought a set of tins off of ebay and had them painted, keeping my original paint set. It was still cheaper than buying a paint set from HD, and I had about a 1/2 day downtime when swapping them out.

i went through the same thing a few years back. i endend up finding a PERFECT take off set, from a forum member over at v-twin forum. removed on delivery, and replaced with a hd limited set. oem set is in the garage attic, just incase, or if i get the notion to have them repainted. put on whatever you want. if you go to the anniversary set, and later decide to sell the bike....just dont try to pass it off as an anniversary bike. no harm/no foul. steve

I agree...If and when you sell the bike just be honest about it...
