Default 84 softail

ok well i have an 84 softail, given to me from my dad (hes the original owner). he says its an "early model" 84 softail so its hard to get parts for it. said that regular 84 softail parts wont fit and that it took his dealership a lot of time and research to get him parts for it. any one have any clue what im talking about and any information on the differences would be a great help.

I would post this in the EVO section as well.

Nice name! Do you go by "Dick?" '84 was the 1st year of the Softail, so I could see how some parts may be scarce, but I've not heard of early '84 vs regular '84.

I have heard that some of the early 84's had left over shovelheads. Maybe that was what he was referring to as being hard to find parts.

I have an early 84...only real difference is the clutch...early 84's had a shovelhead clutch... Most of the drivetrain is leftover shovelhead stuff ...so you have to learn what to order, but parts availability is about the same as a shovel. All 84 softails had an Evo motor...just shovel primary trans etc.

I thought that I read somewhere that the early 84 Softail EVO's had Shovel bottom ends, and EVO top ends. I could very well be wrong too. I was one other time. LOL

All 84 and earley 85's I have seen have shovel castings that were machined for evo tappet blocks and jugs...they have no mounting holes for oil filter mount...but not truly a shovel bottem end.

Gotta be the first year, for the evo and the softail.

I had the last year of the evo softail (99) for HD **** canned it
for that stupid lookin' duck in 2000.
Then they re-incarnated the Fxstc again in 2005 or some **** like that, as I recall, and dumped the duck.
