windshield
I cut about 2 1/2 inches off my windshield the same day I picked up the bike. Then I had bad buffeting with my helmet on, my glasses would bounce and it was hard to see with the world jumping up and down. Then I read on this forum about deflectors. Put them on, and the difference was dramatic. Buffeting stopped. Much more comfortable. And, I like the looks of them too! Best $70 I spent.
Now I'm really confused and need more beer! 4 guys say cut the windshield off a few inches. 2 say get a taller one. 3 say get deflectors. I may be mistaken about the purpose of the windshield. I thought it should be tall enough so you had to look through it, like in a car. Apparently though, even with a tall guy like Mimo, most folks look over the windshield. Is it just supposed to block the wind from your body? Does sound like I need to get some of those $70 deflectors. Hey Fatbernie do you have a cheaper source other than your "stealer"?

For the protection I like looking through mine but in the rain that sucks...
I look over the windshield on my Low Rider. The wind is deflected by the windshield over my head
There is some room on the forks to raise the windshield a bit. When I raised it, I looked through the windshield and experienced buffetting and view distortion.
Looking over it works for me.
Hope this helps.

You want to try to get it so you can either look over or hide, as you see fit just by "extending" or "relaxing" your position. The "official" word, I'm told is that the top of the ws should be just below your eyeline.
The buffeting is caused by the turbulence behind the windshield (kind of like when you approach a cage from behind on the freeway, there is that "rough" spot). The deflectors can help that. You will always get the flap in your shirt, that's just physics, after you get used to it, it's no big deal.
I would rather clean the bugs off a shield than pick them out of my teeth.

Rain and when it gets dirty and its night make it nearly impossible to look through it.
Try visiting your dealer, tell them your problem and see if you can borrow shields off of used bikes.
Helped me figure out my problem.

i have the windvest and i look over mine (6'4"). it keeps the bugs off and a place to hide in the rain. the wind turbulance is not to bad at high speeds

I just purchased 2 HD low profile Slightly smoked WS 1 for my wifes Deluxe and 1 for my Fatboy. The windshield comes up to just below our line of sight as indicated in the HD book. What I noticed is way more turbulence on my Fatboy then with the Deluxe. I believe that with the auxillary lights and turn signals on the Deluxe, they are acting somewhat like the deflectors people are talking about, unlike the Fatboy with no auxillary lights and the turn signals mounted on the handle bars. I am convinced the turbulence is created from the wind coming under the windshield and up around the tank, so deflectors will be a must at least on the Fatboy and probably the Deluxe as well. As far as the height of the windshield I'll go along with it being just below the sight line as indicated in the guide, I don't like looking through the WS. Just another opinion.

Hey Fatbernie those side bags on yer Fatty are just looking real good. Are those HD stuff and are they quick detachable? I need some room to occasionally carry stuff and am tired of putting on a backpack. Jim
Hey, JM,
My next buy will be out of the J&PCycles catalog. Was looking at it today and saw two windows I liked. Also, those bags are straight Harley stuff I got for Christmas last year. I also bought the BareBacks from Cyclevisions and love them. Highly recommend them.
