I'm looking for an older Heritage, maybe 02-05 with low mileage. Is there a difference between the bikes from the 02 models to newer. Here in TN, I found an 02 with 15,800 miles, looks to be bone stock. I've never ridden one, so I have alot of questions. My old ride is the 93 FXLR that has been lowered since new.
What is the best way to lower a Heritage and I know that the ride will be rougher but will it be too much?
If i was you bro i would see what direction i wanted to go with the bike first and buy a used one with a similar setup to what your aiming for(saves you some cash), as for the changes they dont really change i think till 06 and up.
AS FOR THE LOWERING YOU CAN BUY THE KIT, BUT I WOULD JUST SPEND THE CASH FOR THE SHOTGUN SHOCK AIR RIDE IS THE WAY TO GO.
Karen, Not sure of your height but a Herritage is one of the lowest seat height bikes in the HD line.
You may just need to change the seat and bars for a better fit.
The only difference I know of is that electronic fuel injection came out in 07. I don't think the basic bike as changed much from 2000 on, just the EFI.

I am think "KAREN" is not one of our Bro's....lol
If you are wanting a softail that comes stock with bags and windshield, a Heritage is what you want. As for any differences, not any to be concerned with. From 2000 to 2006, the FL's pretty much interchange. And for lowering, I have had a HI-LO on my bike for over 3 years and love it! Have never had a problem with it working or leaking....and it has a life time warranty!
Go get that bike and show us some pics of you riding it!
If you need more reach, check out the Harley Davidson Fit Shop for some suggestions.
For riders under 5' 8" there are reach seats, pull back bars, and motor company or after market shocks to lower the suspension.
Just remember, lowering your suspension gives less travel in the shocks so you may have a stiffer ride and somewhat less comfortable, but it may be necessary.
One of the most important things for any rider is making sure you can put your feet flat on the ground. Trying to lean the bike on one foot, or only being able to reach with your toes is asking for a world of hurt.
02 is a good year because its the last year with stronger crank and timken bearings. If the 02 is efi it also has the better Delphi ecm which prior yrs did not have. 02-06 are almost the same although 05 heads are not as good and 06 heads are the best of all those years. All had efi as an option.
Its common for girls to go for the Deluxe model, FLSTN, because its stock height is 1" lower then the Heritage. May want to check one out and see how it fits.
Take your time and look for one with lots of upgrades - bags, seat, pipes, wheels.... Its a great time to buy used.
I have a 2000 Heritage. I had it lowered for awhile. I used the Progresive
adjustable bolt kit with the stock shocks. I also usd the HD low profile shocks (those are junk) and Progv 422's. I just didn't care for the ride. I have minor lwr back issues, but it just rode like a Mack Truck. I didn't care for the reduced ground clearance either.
I have put the stock susp back in. Rides great now. As others have stated, you can get down lower just by changing seats.
Swapping out the shocks for the Low profiles would lower it same as the deluxe. If I recall there were two flavors of the low profiles. Chrome and black. Without looking it up I thought one went an inch and the other only 3/4's an inch. Would have to check for sure though. I also went with the 422's but haven't been that impressed with them even after lot's of tinkering. I have decided on air ride now. I do have a pair of the low profiles. Black. I think they are the 3/4 inch that I will be selling and in a couple of months the 422's will be also.
In my opinion though the low profiles were a good enough shock once adjusted. For 1up for sure and the wife never complained on 2up.
