I would never try to replace the sliders without removing the forks off the bike.
The light bar has to be dropped so the fork tins can come off.
You have to get to the pinch bolts to loosen the forks. The fork caps bolts have to be removed to drop the forks out.
The headlight has to be taken off the mounting bolt so you have enough room to get the tools on the pinch bolt and nut, but it doesn't have to be removed completely.

It depends on your bike. On teh FX model softail you can access the bolts to remove the forks without taking it apart. Basically, you have to take a lot of stuff off, but go for it.
Did my Deluxe with no problems just drop the tire and fender, take out lower fork bolts and sliders come off with some nominal persuasion. Per the manual. Teflon

Yeah bro..sounds like you have either a lux or heritage with the mention of the fork tins. No need to remove all that. Its just as simple as the man says. ONLY if you don't strip out the damn 6mm allen.
