Default fatboy tank decal

this is the tank decals that are on my 04 fatboy, im just wondering if they are factory for the year of my bike, i cant find any info or pics of them on any other bikes, they are kinda raised up from the tank but cant tell if it a sticker outside of the clear coat or under it, i dont really like it i would like to put some oldskool badges on it instead!! does anybody have any info on these?

thanks, kyle

If the edge of the decal is lifting from the surface of the paint, clear coat would have to be under the decal. If clear coat was over the top of the decal, the edge couldn't raise from the surface of your tank.

If you want to remove them, just heat them with a heat gun or even a blow dryer will work. Just heat, pick at a lifted edge, and pull steady & gentle. It should come off in one piece.

If its a factory decal...and it looks like one to me from the pic...its under the clearcoat. To be sure...pull it into ur garage...use a florecent shop light and take a close look....my bet is that you will not see an edge, but you will see a continuous film of clear coat. It's too bad HD does that...I like their more discreet badges...hell....I have one permanently winked on my right arm...but I don't like those huge spelled out script decals or their fake pinstriping. Pull the tin....get it sanded down and treat it to a new paint job.

Actually I have seen decals come loose even when clear coated over. Get your bike in a well lit area and take your fingernail and see if you can feel the edge of the decal. Or look where it is coming loose at and see if there is a edge of clear where the sticker is loose at.

My guess is they are cleared over. That is how my stock fatboy decals are done. I want to do the same but the cost has outweighed the desire to do it. And yes, the decals are raised up on mine too and you can clearly feel them when you slide your finger over them.

Those are not the factory decals for that year or any other year Fat Boy, so it's likely they are not clearcoated.

That is the type of decal they use for the special edition paint sets they do each year.
