Default Syn Oil for Softail?

Bought some Mobil 1 Vtwin oil the other day for a 2001 Night Train. Stopped by a bike shop today and he said he did not recommend it. He said he would put it in for me, but recommened Rev Tech because of the roller bearings. IS this a valid comment?

I really don't know a definitive answer to you question, but I do know that shops tend to recommend the oils that they carry and denigrate all others. There is an old saying: "If you want it done right, do it yourself." see a discussion on oils at: https://www.hdforums.com/forumid_222/tt.htm

I'd be running from that shop and not go back. The guy is full of something. Which is to say it ain't a valid statement.

Chief mechanic at the local HD shop advised me that Mobil 1 was good as long as it was specific for V-Twins. He said he was sure that Mobile 1 for cars would also be okay, but that if it wasn't motorcycle specific there could be a warranty issue if something happened.

We are leaving on a weekend trip today, and I am changing my wife's Heritage to Mobile 1 V-twin before we leave.

I wasn't going to go to Mobile 1 synthetic because I change oil ever 2,500 miles religiously, and didn't want the expense, but my son-in-law is a district manager in Industrial Mobile sales, and is getting me the oil for cost. I want to see if it will noticably reduce the heat on the 88TC engines. If it doesn't I will go back to HD 20/50 dino oil, which I feel is completely satisfactory with the frequency of my oil changes.

Regards,

Bill

Absolutely NOT!

That is about as good as it gets IMO and as everybodies comments reflect it, run! I also agree with the shop pushing what they sell.

I made the switch from Syn 3 to Mobil 1 V Twin and I can see & feel and hear a difference in my 95. It also lost a few degreese on the oil as compared to the Syn 3 to boot. Go for it, you'll be glad you did.

rhino,

My son in law just dropped off 2 cases of Mobile 1 V-Twin oil at my house. It came with a guarantee certificate that said if any damage was suffered by the engine do to the oil they would cover the cost of repairs. I have never seen any other oil company do that.

I plan to use it with confidence, and if it takes the temps down a noticable amount, I will continue to do so.

Regards,

Bill

The Mobil 1 car oil won't cause a warranty problem. Harley knows this, but too many dealers & mechanics don't, and HD ain't going to set 'em straight. Why? Follow the money!

It doesn't just apply to oil, but to nearly any modification (with few exceptions, which the MoCO must specify)you might make to the bike. For something, in general, to invalidate a warranty, it must be the cause of the problem. Adding a non-HD part that is suitable for the intended use, is installed and adjusted correctly, won't mess up the warranty, no matter what the local HD guru says.

I agree with everything you guys have said. I changed my bike over to Mobil 1. I am running it in after the 95 kit with a mineral oil but after the 4,000k's running in period, it will be changed back to Mobil 1.

I spoke to the guy who does the work on my bike and he said Mobil were asked to make a syn oil for HD. After they made the oil for Harley, Harley wanted to badge the oil bottles with their name. Mobil said, vertually, get stuffed we will put our name on it, it's our oil!!
