Default Cam Tensioner's 04 Deuce

Thought I would also post this in the softail forum. Just a little over 45,000 miles on my 2004 Deuce. Looks like it was time to change them. Had the HD Hydraulic kit installed along with the adjustible push rods. No upgrade on cam. Broken parts of the cam tensioners were removed and new kit installed. Everything runs fine. Had my Indy do the work and saved approximately $525 by not having it done at the dealer.

Your lucky you caught it in time, almost looks like it was about to explode.

Why didnt you do a cam change at the same time, nothing more in labor just the cost of the cams

Default Cams

I would have to ask why a cam upgrade? What would the extra $400 cam(s) have done for me? I certainly don't need anymore power and I like the 50-52 mpg I consistently get in town or on the 4 lane. I am not even sure why I got the adjustible push rods. Other than the pads falling apart, I had no issues with the bike. Just saying. As Paul Harvey used to say: "and now the rest of the story": With over 45,000 on the odometer I will probably keep the bike until 100,000 or more and then either trade it, sell it or no longer ride. At the ripe age of 69 and turning 70 next month it is doubtfull that another Harley is in my future. I have really enjoyed this Deuce and consider it one of harley's better machines. It takes me anywhere I need to go.

I think thats great that you are satisfied with the bike as it is. If t meets your needs and you obviously ride it based on the miles you have put on it.

I guess a lot of us do some of the performance up grades for different reasons, overall power, cooler running, more efficient, more responsive.

In my case I did cams to go with the factory 95 kit that my bike came with. I did my own install and at the same time replaced the tensioners with the SE Hyd setup, I got the cams and Se Hyd set up off Ebay new from a dealer for less than $ 600. It cooled it down a lot and if anything improved the overall mileage since I dont roll the throttle on as hard due to the added Tq.

Enjoy your bike and ride safe

Yes... I would have to agree that in the 'old days' performance upgrades were for hot rodders only, and the quality of custom parts meant shorter life and durability. Now I think of performance upgrades as EPA avoidance and getting the bike to run the way it should have in the first place. When a 1972 stock metric can make your Harley weep at the light from fear and pee in its own wheel tracks, something ain't right.

My Indy told me the cams would really wake my bike up but I was under the impression that it wasn't asleep. He also wanted the sale. LOL

I don't see the reason to upgrade cams just to do it. If you have a problem with your bike or it just isn't what you want it to be, go for it and good on you, but this place is getting crazy.

OP, I'm glad you got it taken care of, yes, 45K is about right for a bike well ridden with no other problems for the tensioners to go. I'm sure mine will go before that, but I still like to hit it kind of hard.

Enjoy the ride, be safe.
