Took my 11 'Bones in for service and to get some parts thrown on last Friday. Told em not to rush, but being close to a week, I figured I'd give em a call to find out if my bike was ready.
"It's about done, but I see we've got a transmission bearing on order for you"
Wai...What? 1K service....parts.....No transmission issue. Apparently when they were swapping the side cover off they noticed one of the bearings was warped. This is a blessing and a downer. I'm glad I had the side cover swapped, cuz they found a problem....I'm just mad that it'll probably be until the 23rd before I get my bike back. Rather upset right now.
I know the wait sucks, but think how long you'd be waiting if that bearing failed sometime in the near future and damaged/destroyed other parts in the trans. And a scattered trans and possibly a locked up rear tire isn't fun...
Yeah. They said they discovered it when they were swapping out the side. My only gripe is that they waited until I called to let me know. Thank god for the warranty though, heh. Decent group of guys up there. Most other places probably would have shrugged it off, and let the bike roll out the door.
Those guys are the best in the area. At least, I feel a professional atmosphere every time I walk in. Glad to hear of the catch, but worried about QC at the factory. Weird...
the only thing they did wrong was not tell you when they found the problem . the way i was trained you never do anything to a customers product without them knowing about it . doesn't matter if it's going to cost them or if it's covered by warranty , no work gets done until the customer approves it
that said i'm glad they found it , shows they're paying attention as they're doing stuff .
+1, i think it might actually be illegal in some states to make repairs to a persons vehicle without their consent.
my guess, but i'm cynical, is that they are double dippin HD and you.. you're paying for some upgrades, but they are also charging HD for a warranty repair while they have it apart and getting full warranty compensation from HD for the repair.
In all my years of pulling wrenches, i've never seen a warped bearing, warped rotors ? yeah, but never a bearing.
THere was some miscommunication. The bearing was seized. I actually saw it for myself. Even the service rep said that were it not for the fact that I swapped out the side cover, they would have never discovered the failure.
The only way it is illegal is if there was a charge for the part, but since it's under warranty, they can, under the Consumer Protection Act, make the repair without my consent. If I had to pay for it, then thats when the legal drama begins. I don't have to pay for it, and now my only gripe is not having my primary bike on such a gorgeous weekend.
On the plus side....the bike looks absolutly awesome with the wrinkle black parts on it.
