This seems like it's getting worse...when starting the bike cold I'm having to hold the revs up for 6 -10 minutes before she'll idle without shutting off. Once warm she runs fine. This is getting to be a pain in the ****.
Thoughts? Thanks
how about a little more info on Ur bike..
Yr, motor, FI or carbed, tuner or not, miles, U know stuff like that so we could at least know a little bit bout U issue...
How long have you had it, did you buy it used, was it from a dealer or a private party? Its a 98 with only 12 k on it that is good. i would say you need a tune up if you have not had one in a while. sounds like the bike did a lot of sitting.

Yeah, admitedly it's been sitting more than it should. I got the bike in 2001 from a private sale and used to ride frerquently but the last few years I may take her out for a ride once every few months. I need to get this problem figured out and probably pass her on to someone has the time to enjoy her.
Agree with the advice regarding carb cleaning. I had the same issue with a previous used bike that had been sitting a while before I bought it. The problem was that varnish had formed on the needle valves and ports from the 10% ethanol gas; the stuff starts to gunk up within two weeks if it sits. The only solution was to overhaul the carbs then run fuel stabilizer, like Stabil, in it all the time, especially if you don't ride at least once a week. This is apparently more prevalent on bikes, lawn mowers, outboards or any engine with carbs. Motors with fuel injection seem to avoid this problem because the nozzle pressure is somewhat self-cleaning. But just wait until they start forcing the 15% ethanol gas on us; then we may all have rough runners.
Could be that the choke is malfunctioning or out of adjustment. Also, low speed jet clogged a likely candidate. Check the choke adjustment first, then get a can of carb cleaner, back out the jets and spray the chit out of it. That may do it without disassembly.
