So I took my 03 fuel injected train out for a ride tonight to fill up the tank and go for a little cruise. I pulled back into my driveway, put the bike in neutral, opened up my garage, got back on the bike, put the bike back in first, and proceeded to let off the clutch to pull it in. However, like a complete noob that I am, I let off the clutch a wee bit too much and stalled the bike. (First time ive ever done it I swear. Haha) So I go to fire it back up and when it started, it made the god awful like bang or pop or some sort of something from the engine or intake or something in the fuel injector area. The check engine light also came on for about 5 seconds then shut off. I pulled the bike into the garage and shut it off. This worried me, so I waited a few minutes and fired it up again. Same thing. Makes a bang and CEL comes on then shuts off. Let it run for a few minutes idle and shut it off. Then I tried to start it again and this time it fired right up perfectly fine, except the CEL came on for 5 seconds and shut off. Now at this point I am also getting a really heavy gasoline smell coming from around the intake. I let the bike sit for a half hour or so and then went back out to check it. I still smelled the gas really bad. Thinking I may have overfilled the tank or possibly flooded it from starting it up and shutting it off a few times, I decided to take it for another ride. Started it up, perfectly fine again and took it for a ride. Everything seemed to work fine and operate normally. So I dont know what it could have been. Maybe a freak thing? Anyone ever have this problem or something similar?
I've had the same thing happen to me a few times. every time it was after a very short time between shutting off and firing back up. i beleive its unburned fuel sitting in the intake and the engine is just too rich on start up. with efi the computer will usually advance timing for start up and possibly causing it to backfire on occasion.. its hasn't seemed to hurt anything, i just hope that it doesn't blow out the map sensor or damage the injector tips. luckily it's very rare that it does it.
that gosh-awful noise is the starter clutch slipping.
the "hot start just after shutdown usually makes it worse.
the "starter clutch is bareley adequate for a stock engine , if you raise compression it really will talk to you .
the immediate re-start causes the cylinder to try to detonate pushing back on the starter clutch,,..
it is a "torrington" type clutch, and the noise is the bearings slipping on the shaft..
I put two in my 1200 sportie (has 200 pounds compression) before I got a good one ..( yes they are not all equal)
they do sell aftermarket starter clutches , and higher output starters
