Yeah thats probably a customer service rep that has no clue about the product and is looking it up while speaking with the customer. It's amusing that once you mention a known problem, they start to back track and get caught with their foot in their mouth. To me it seems like a bad way to handle it, if they know there is a problem, they should be sending the new one out before you pull the old one. You can definitely tell the difference of customer service people that ride and the ones that don't. Nobody wants to pull their bike apart and have it disabled while waiting for a new part.
