It is a PITA. I was going to do the same, disassembled as far as I could, but couldn't figure out how to get the door assembly off. I'm sure there's a way, but it eluded me. I decided to brush it with green scotchbrite to at least get rid of the shiny!
Just in case anyone else is interested, saw a thread a few weeks back, the forum sponsor Powder Pro now coats the ignition switches any color you want. The price was cheap too, and includes disassembly and reassembly. Just send him your switch.
+1 on the above post. Not only can they do ignition switches but they can do fuel caps and fuel gauges as well. And the price is right. I'm sending all my stuff off to them next week.
That brushed look you did with the Scotch Brite is nice too though.

Was just about to post this.. I'm sure Powder Pro will chime in soon with some details.. I'm thinking about it, too.. Or actually doing it in Satin Chrome to match the rest of the Lo... hmm.. a PM may be in order..
we are more than happy to help you out! to my knowledge we are the only shop in the country that does this work... as stated we can also do your gas caps... $40 for the ignition switch and $75 for the gas caps!
