I think I have been able to determine that my very slight fluid leak on my 1998 fatboy is between the inner primary and the tranny, it looks like my tranny fluid is a little low.
In the near future ( read next couple of months) I will take the primary off, pull off the inner primary and replace all the seals using this kit from JPcycles http://www.jpcycles.com/product/610-119
I have never taken the primary apart before. I understand basically what needs to be done. I guess my questions are
1) are there any special tools I need, any unusual socket sizes.
2) anything else I should look at besides the primary seal kit since I will have it apart. I think I may look at the chain tensioner. To my knowledge all in the primary is original and all is working fine. But if I am to go to all this trouble, I dont want to realize I should have done this or that since I was basically right there if you know what I mean.
any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
You'll need a primary drive locking tool....E Bay pretty cheap. You may want to go ahead and change the bearing in your primary as well while your that deep into it just for good measure.
Primary drive locking tool.. OK.. thats the plastic looking block.. no worries. I'll pick one up..
I have heard good things about the all-***** starters.. so I figure their inner primary bearing and seal kit would be ok to use? http://www.jpcycles.com/product/610-340
Check out the Fix My Hog Dvd's. They have one that shows a inner primary cover replacement on a softail. It covers the whole procedure and tools required. I haven't needed to do it yet but I'm pretty confident I could pull it off after watching the guys do it on the video. I forget which DVD had it but the same DVD covers a bunch of other stuff too.
I don't know the particulars of your primary cover, but when you change the bearing, make sure that if there appears to be a little hole located around the bearing housing, don't block it off with the snap ring. Orientate it so the opening of the snap ring will allow oil to enter it.
