Out riding and my heritage takes a crap in fifth gear. I pull in the clutch and twist the throttle and it comes alive again, I down shift to 4th and it does the same thing, every time it happened I had to get all the way down into 3rd and build my way back up into 5th.
If I cruz in 5th gear its fine but as soon as I get on it it craps out. I think its a carburetor issue. It only does it at high speeds though, never in 1st through 3rd gear. It did this five times to me in one ride, and then completely shut down on me. Got it started up again and died again as soon as I got into higher speeds (completely) no more response. Got it started and slowly rode it all the way home at 50 m.p.h
Whats puzzling me is when it died those last few times and wouldn't come alive until I pulled over and cranked on it a few times.
Have you checked the fuel caps? Over time dust gets pulled into the vented caps and can plug them off enough to slow down fuel flow to the carb. Which can result in a situation you are describing. Are you running an inline filter? If so, is it clean? A fuel line that is breaking down on the inside can also restrict fuel flow which will cause the same situation. Maybe pull the petcock and check the in tank filter. If everything checks out then I would look at the carb. Mainly the pump if you are running the stock carb.
